Ashwagandha Root

Botanical Name: Withania somnifera
Also Known As: Indian Ginseng, Winter Cherry

Ashwagandha is one of the best-known herbs of the Ayurvedic tradition, where the root has been valued for centuries as a restorative tonic associated with strength, vitality, resilience, and overall well-being. Today, it is commonly classified as an adaptogenic herb and used to support the body’s natural ability to adapt to periods of everyday physical and emotional stress.

Modern research has studied Ashwagandha for its potential to support a healthy stress response, promote relaxation, and support healthy sleep quality. Research is promising, although studies have used a variety of extracts, preparations, and serving amounts, and results from concentrated extracts may not apply directly to whole powdered root.

Ashwagandha has a distinctive earthy, slightly bitter flavor. The powdered root may be mixed into warm beverages, smoothies, or other foods and has traditionally been combined with warm milk in Ayurvedic preparations.
