Goldenseal Root ~

Goldenseal is a woodland perennial native to eastern North America, recognizable by its distinctive golden-yellow root. It has a long history of use in North American herbal traditions and became an important botanical in American herbalism during the 1800s.
Goldenseal naturally contains several plant alkaloids, including berberine, hydrastine, and canadine, which contribute to the root's intensely bitter character.
Traditionally, Goldenseal has been incorporated into bitter herbal preparations and digestive herbal traditions, as well as extracts, infusions, and topical botanical preparations. Because of its potency, it is best suited to occasional rather than prolonged everyday use.

Warnings & Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Not for use in infants or young children. NCCIH specifically warns against use in infants because Goldenseal contains berberine, which may be harmful to newborns.
Starwest additionally warns against use by immunocompromised individuals and states that Goldenseal should not be applied to open wounds.
Goldenseal may interact with many medications. If you take prescription or over-the-counter medications, consult a qualified healthcare professional or pharmacist before use. Research has found clinically meaningful effects on drug metabolism, including an interaction that reduced metformin levels.
