Lungwort ~

Botanical Name: Pulmonaria officinalis
Also Known As: Herb of Mary, Mary’s Tears

Lungwort is a flowering perennial native to Europe and a member of the borage family. Its distinctive green leaves are covered with pale spots, giving the plant its recognizable appearance.

Lungwort has been valued in European herbal traditions since the Middle Ages. Its name developed through the historical Doctrine of Signatures, in which the spotted appearance of its leaves was thought to resemble lung tissue and led early herbalists to associate the plant with respiratory herbal traditions.

Lungwort also has an interesting place in European folklore. It has historically been called the “Herb of Mary” and was associated with protection, including traditions involving protection from the evil eye.
